This study establishes a critical fabrication pathway for superconducting quantum devices by directly linking engineered aluminum grain size to reduced non-TLS losses. By manipulating the intrinsic metal architecture rather than just material interfaces, researchers achieved a two-orders-of-magnitude improvement in resonator quality factors, addressing fundamental limits on qubit coherence times. These findings provide essential insights into optimizing dielectric trimming profiles and deposition heating for next-generation quantum hardware performance.

Aluminum Grain Size Linked to Improved Qubit Coherence Times

Quantum Zeitgeist5 min de cititArticolul și perspectiva sunt în engleză.

Material losses in superconducting circuits fundamentally limit qubit coherence times and resonator quality factors, and this work links the aluminum film grain size to non-TLS losses and the dielectric trimming profile and roughness to TLS loss. To reduce metal-related losses, the aluminum microstructure is engineered by heating during deposition, increasing grain size and reducing grain boundary density.

Researchers at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and the National Company of Telecommunications and Information Security in Jeddah have established a direct link between aluminum film grain size and non-Two-Level System (non-TLS) losses, a connection previously overlooked in efforts to improve qubit performance. The work moves beyond conventional loss mitigation strategies focused on material interfaces to examine the intrinsic properties of the superconducting metal itself. Specifically, the study identifies that the profile and roughness of dielectric trimming contribute to TLS loss, meaning the shaping of a material’s edges impacts qubit…
