From Youth Employment to Consumer Scenario Innovation: What Does “AI+” Bring to the Coffee Industry Ecosystem?

The “shelf life” of new consumer scenarios is getting shorter and shorter. A pop-up, a co-branded collaboration, or a new concept may bring a consumer brand several months of new foot traffic, but once the novelty fades, how can the brand keep its users? This is a shared concern that has emerged over the past few years, from consumer brands to commercial real estate and neighborhood operators, and it was a topic repeatedly discussed by store managers, investors, and entrepreneurs at the “AiPartner Taking Ai to the Frontlines – Ningbo Coffee Life Week Scenario Innovation Exchange Meeting,” co-hosted by the Yinzhou District Development and Reform Bureau of Ningbo and 36Kr at Yunchuang Zhe-Li Youth Nation at the end of last month. Take Yinzhou as an example: the district has no shortage of a rich manufacturing ecosystem and consumer scenarios, nor of young people. When scenarios, equipment, and talent all fall within the same geographic radius, what kinds of new consumer scenario innovations can emerge? 01 The Industry Chain Is Changing, and Youth Opportunities Are Changing Too Yunchuang Zhe-Li Youth Nation is located in the Gaojiao Park area of Shounan Subdistrict in Yinzhou District. It is a well-known commercial street north of Zhejiang University Ningbo Institute of Technology, covering an area of 40,000 square meters. “We are exploring digital consumption formats such as intelligent coffee retail to keep this commercial space vibrant.” At the recently concluded Ningbo Coffee Life Week exchange meeting, Zhang Hua, project head of Zhejiang Yunchuang Weilai Group, said. Hosting Coffee Life Week for seven consecutive years, with coffee as the representative of new digital consumption formats, is the original intention of Yunchuang Weilai. As AI capabilities permeate the entire coffee industry chain from production to consumption, equipment “entering the scene” has brought visible efficiency gains and changes in scenarios, while the evolving coffee consumption landscape also poses new challenges for practitioners, such as high equipment investment costs, troublesome maintenance, and a lack of supporting training and professional talent. Meike is a company that makes AI-powered flexible, multi-category unmanned beverage robots. Yao Jincheng, the project initiator of its AI program, believes that AI entering the coffee industry chain is essentially about using technology to reconstruct the relationship between “people, goods, and place.” A device measuring 1.4 square meters, operating 24/7 unattended, and producing drinks in 60 seconds addresses cost structures and scenario blind spots that traditional stores cannot cover. “AI does not replace baristas; it frees them from repetitive labor so that high-quality beverages can be brought closer to consumers,” Yao Jincheng said, adding that AI is redefining the barista. He said the most urgently needed talent in the “AI+coffee” market is three types of composite professionals who “understand coffee, understand technology, and understand operations”: coffee robot maintenance engineers, AI beverage R&D specialists, and unmanned
