A 20K nickelate superconductor exhibits a clear pairing pattern

The discovery of superconducting nickelates provides a unique opportunity to explore the pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity, and research focuses on similarities with and distinctions from high-temperature cuprate superconductors. One important problem concerns the pairing mechanism, which is key to understanding the nature and origin of the high-temperature superconductivity.
Researchers have found evidence of clean-limit d-wave superconductivity in an infinite-layer samarium nickelate film exhibiting superconductivity at 20 K. The work, led by Qingming Huang of Xiamen University and Liang Qiao of the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, used ultrafast terahertz spectroscopy to determine a ratio of mean free path to coherence length of approximately 1.5. This finding confirms the material operates in a “clean limit” where electrons pair without significant scattering, establishing parallels between nickelate and cuprate superconductors and offering insight into the origins of high-temperature superconductivity. This observation aligns with theoretical predictions for clean-limit d-wave pairing, a phenomenon previously established in high-temperature…
