Researchers have successfully bridged decades-old phenomenological understanding in quantum scattering with rigorous analytical derivation, confirming the transition to the Ericson regime where resonances overlap into universal randomness. This validation across diverse platforms—from nuclear systems to microwave cavities—demonstrates that complex stochastic behaviors follow predictable Gaussian distributions, offering a robust theoretical framework for analyzing chaotic many-body dynamics without relying on empirical approximations alone.

Researchers validated a 60-year-old theoretical understanding of the Ericson regime in quantum scattering, showing how resonances overlap at higher energies.

Researchers have experimentally validated an understanding of quantum scattering that has been phenomenologically understood for over sixty years, confirming the emergence of the Ericson regime. This phenomenon, previously analytically elusive, describes how scattering cross sections behave randomly and follow a universal Gaussian distribution in complex systems. The team, including Simon Köhnes of Fakultät für Physik, Universität Duisburg-Essen and colleagues, derived the transition to this regime using the Heidelberg approach and validated it through comparisons with microwave experiments and numerical simulations. According to the paper, the Ericson regime was first identified in nuclei and is now fully explained after decades…
